Chapter 12

Azura headed out early that morning to the ruins. It had been hard seeing just how bad things had become in Althea when she arrived a few days ago. It sickened her to see what merkind had been reduced to. Worse still, Erik had almost stumbled onto the Bounty when they had come out to explore the ruins last night. But at least they knew someone had taken the missing merfolk. Too bad they hadn’t got any leads on who or why.

She hadn’t had much time over the past few days to see Bones and Jinx very much, but she would make time to see them now. Once she’d transported out of the city, she shifted into her mermaid form and swam out to the ship.

“Look who’s decided to grace us with her presence,” Bones said as she dropped onto the deck. “Thought you’d forgotten about us.”

“Don’t be daft. I’ve been busy.”

“Jinx said you’ve been helping the merfolk a lot. Aren’t you worried about finding the witch?” Bones arched an eyebrow. “You know how you-know-who gets if we don’t complete a mission quickly. Has she contacted you?”

Azura shook her head. “I haven’t heard anything. Maybe she can’t contact us; she’s always conserving her power. She didn’t specify a time.” The queen must have known finding the witch wouldn’t be easy. Especially since no one knew what had happened to her in the past few centuries.

“That’s one good thing at least. Az, I hope you are not getting distracted by things in Althea.”

“When have I ever got distracted on a mission?”

“This is different. It involves your home and your people. Not to mention Erik.”

Azura crossed her arms. “What did he have to do with anything?”

“You spend a lot of time with him.”

She couldn’t believe it. Had Jinx been spying on her?

“Yeah, to get information for the mission. I’m never going to find out anything about the witch without a little help.” She put her hands on her hips. “Have you found anything?”

“It’s hard getting through the rocks out here by myself. Jinx helps, but it would be better if you were here. If you can’t find anything in the city, join us. We can’t afford to waste time.”

“Searching the city isn’t a waste of time,” she snapped. “There are answers there — I still need to find my father’s missing library. You know that. So don’t question my loyalty. Nothing is more important to me than saving my mother.”

“Is it? Because from what I’ve heard, you’ve been spending more time helping Erik with the merfolk than searching for the library.”

“People in Althea haven’t had a healer in months. You can’t blame me for wanting to do a little good.”

“You’re not here to heal people, little sister. We have to save your mother. That must be your first priority. Besides, the queen wants to see you.”

Azura froze. “What? How do you know that?”

“Morwenna had a vision of her, and the queen demanded to see you. You can imagine how much that upset Mor.
